In the wake of Covid-19, more and more sellers have joined e-commerce platforms for their sales. While these sellers previously followed traditional ways of doing sales and forming a loyal customer base over years of expertise, Covid has broken many set rules of many successful entrepreneurs. E-commerce has been a boon in this pandemic situation for most of the small and medium businesses. It was a survival instinct of the sellers to open their online stores because it meant the situation wouldn’t conclude in a few days or months but rather years.

Online selling practices like inventory management, dispatch, shipping, delivery, or returns can be followed by a rule book for a successful running of online sales but maintaining the safety of the delivery person in this entire process matters the most. While most in need only opted for such delivery service jobs, their health was of utmost importance to the e-commerce business owners.

For Goods Delivery

During the COVID-19 pandemic, special thought must be given to precautions against infection for those who are involved in processing orders and delivering goods to customers.

  • It is important that all workers involved in home deliveries be given detailed guidance and information about COVID-19 and the main ways the disease is spread.
  •  All workers must maintain high levels of personal hygiene, e.g. by washing their hands frequently, wearing masks or face shields, and using hand sanitizers.
  • All workers should use disposable gloves and change them frequently when handling items that are to be delivered; the virus can live on cardboard boxes and packaging for up to 72 hours.
  • To reduce the likelihood that workers will be exposed to anger and negative comments from customers, and to maximize customer satisfaction, it is important to send notifications, make announcements or send SMS messages to warn of delays or other problems.
  •  Drivers involved in-home deliveries should disinfect the steering wheel, gear lever, door handles, and other surfaces of their vehicles that they frequently touch. Particular attention must be given to disinfecting surfaces after coughing or sneezing. This must also be done when handing over the use of the vehicle to another driver.
  • Disposable gloves should be put on before handling items, and the gloves should be disposed of, in the rubbish, after use.
  • Before goods are delivered, the customer is to be contacted, by phone or other electronic means, to decide on the exact point and time of delivery, stating, for example, that the goods are to be left at the door of the apartment. Goods should not be delivered directly into the recipient’s hands because of the danger of infection. 
  • Barcode scanner to be used on mobile phones for cashless transactions and confirmation of delivery by the customer.
  • Packages to be disinfected with sanitizers during the return of the goods without damaging the product. Precautions to be taken on spraying the sanitizer only on the outer boxes.

For Food Delivery

Scientists are yet to find any evidence of COVID-19 being transmitted through food whereas WHO has confirmed this. However, the infection can spread through doorbells, containers, and grocery items as the virus can survive on these surfaces for long.

  •  Ensure that the customers are following all safety precautions like wearing a mask during the delivery of goods/groceries.
  • To reduce the likelihood that workers will be exposed to anger and negative comments from customers, and to maximize customer satisfaction, it is important to send notifications, make announcements or send SMS messages to warn of delays or other problems.
  •  Make sure that the customer has opted for contactless delivery while ordering online.
  •  It is best if the workers leave the food parcels or grocery packages outside the door, ringing the bell to alert the customer. 
  • Some apartment complexes are even preventing the entry of the agents beyond the main gate, allowing the residents only to collect their parcels from the security cabin. Workers should follow these rules to keep themselves safe.
  • Paying online for the order is the only safe way at the moment to prevent infection, as cash exchange has a high chance of spreading the virus. If the customer offers cash, workers should be able to educate them about different online payment options and go for cashless delivery.  
  • Eating directly from the takeout parcel might seem tempting, especially to avoid the pile of dishes in your kitchen sink, but it is recommended that the workers inform the customers to discard all the boxes, foils, and packets once the food/grocery is delivered and eat in clean plates or bowls.
  • Workers should wash hands or use a sanitizer immediately after handling a delivered package or food parcel. 
  • Workers should avoid touching your face, mouth, and nose before washing your hands.
